I've been mulling over this brief for ages now, worrying about what theme/concept to choose for my designs. I think it's best that I just start and see what happens. I worried about it being too surface-level, but at the end of the day they're just stationery designs so it could end up being something fun.
I really enjoy seeing the designs of matchbox labels. They are such small, neat objects that often feature really great pieces of design and illustration. There are photo archives online, as well as being posted by people on social media that are also interested in them (Maraid, Design for Today...)
I could have chosen to do birthday cards, or christmas cards, but I wanted the theme of my designs to not be based on an occasion. Instead, I thought I would lead with an aesthetic or tone that I like, and see if I could channel that into some ideas. That way, they would be suitable all year-round.
The theme I decided on was space, and there are some really lovely matchbox labels, posters, and other printed materials that document the space race and the time surrounding it during soviet era Russia. Aesthetically, they are interesting to me because they are serious yet playful, and are about exploration and technology. The appearance of them is also timeless in my opinion, despite them being decades old.

The qualities I want to try and go for are: playful, considered, detail but minimal, bold, using overlays, block colours, and grain/noise.
