Composition | Figure, Object, Landscape

For this task we had to create 5 rough compositions, all involving a figure, object, and some sort of landscape. Before refining a chosen sketch.

First very basic ideas on the left, before refining a couple on the opposite page.

I looked at materials and colour and how they affected the overall image. I wanted the pencil lines to be visible through the solid colour so I tried a few mediums.

I wanted the image to fit with the mood of the small character. So I opted for a monochrome scheme to cast a bleaker tone.

This is my final A5 composition. I'm not overly happy with the finished example, I think the mock-ups I made in my sketchbook have a better line quality, and are a lot looser.

When I discussed how I was dissatisfied with my final image, I think I realised that when I'm drawing for no reason, or for enjoyment my approach is much less restricted. Resulting in pictures that are more fun, and that flow better.

Separate the mindsets. Be calm, get in the sketch zone
